Writting and the Internet
Technology has changed writing but I believe this article goes a little overboard. Through online communities and texting we are creating an extension of the English language. English as not a dead language and therefore changes with the times and as people use it; it is only a matter of time before the things we use online become used in everyday writing. However I have to disagree with the claim the article says about improving student’s writing. I write online, I text, and I send e-mails, but I still believe that my writing skills come from school and the constant practice that they make me go through each year. Writing the way we write online, what is considered to be informal, does not in my opinion truly develop a person’s writing skills.

The Wiki of Duke University
The Duke Wiki, or Duiki, is an online community similar to popular social networks such as facebook and myspace. It is meant to be exclusively to students of Duke and with the purpose of trying to create an online community that brings everyone in Duke closer together both on and offline. It is also filled with reviews and descriptions of places and things relating to Duke itself and the surrounding area. Surprisingly enough this website is ran solely by volunteers showing the dedication of its members through its polished presentation.

Interview(first person)
-Could you please tell us about your topic for the upcoming paper?
-First person shots in video games, movies and pictures create a feeling that the viewer is part of the scene.
-Is there any specific reason you chose this topic?
-I have always been a fan of movies and different filming techniques. The movie Planet Earth has a seen where the camera goes over the edge of a cliff, which gives the viewer a thrill while in first person; I think that played a big role in me choosing this as my topic.
-For what purpose is first person used usually in video games, movies and pictures?
-First person is almost always used to intensify a persons experience and putting the audience in the scene.
-You mentioned the movie example; do you have any other examples?
-For video games, there are shooter games, in which you feel as if you are part of the action, which is part of why they are so successful, and for pictures I have this picture of a gun being pointed at the viewer which gives the viewer a real shock. I also have another picture of the edge of the Empire State building in which you see straight down.

Telescope Brainstorm / Research
Definition:
An optical instrument designed to make distant objects appear nearer, containing an arrangement of lenses, or of curved mirrors and lenses, by which rays of light are collected and focused and the resulting image magnified.
Examples:
The Hubble Space Telescope (present)
The Spitzer Space Telescope (present)
The James Webb Space Telescope (future)
More at: http://nasascience.nasa.gov/astrophysics/mission_list
Brief explanation of how telescopes work:
Telescopes originated when scientists discovered the properties of light to stray from its original path as it passes from one medium to another, also known as refraction. This ability of a lens to redirect light to a desired point is what lies behind the basic telescope invention.

Global Warming

Hurricanes were thought to be an entirely North Atlantic phenomenon. In late March 2004, the first Atlantic cyclone to form south of the equator hit Brazil with 40 144 km/h winds

The rise in temperature has caused many rivers across the world to dry up causing scarcity of waters in many places.

Lewis Glacier, North Cascades, Washington in 1992 after melting away in 1990, there is only scattered snowpatches and no glacier ice is left.

Joel Sternfeld, Warren Avenue at 23rd Street, Detroit, Michigan, October 1993
When I first see this image, the image of the man wearing red stands out and as the first thing i notice. The red he is wearing shouts blood and the picture as a whole sends the message of death. There are also many sentences written out around the photograph, all of which have to do with committing a crime, particularly the crime of killing another human being. The image's structure is actually very organized and has the ideas it is trying to convey spread out enough so that the viewer can focus on each one, yet together enough so that there is no negative space that has no meaning in the image. The photographer's point of view is that of an observer who takes the photograph without trying to seem manipulative of the images message since he takes the shoot squared off. The strongest metaphor in the image would have to be the red that shouts death to the viewer.
