Writting and the Internet

Technology has changed writing but I believe this article goes a little overboard. Through online communities and texting we are creating an extension of the English language. English as not a dead language and therefore changes with the times and as people use it; it is only a matter of time before the things we use online become used in everyday writing. However I have to disagree with the claim the article says about improving student’s writing. I write online, I text, and I send e-mails, but I still believe that my writing skills come from school and the constant practice that they make me go through each year. Writing the way we write online, what is considered to be informal, does not in my opinion truly develop a person’s writing skills.

The Wiki of Duke University

The Duke Wiki, or Duiki, is an online community similar to popular social networks such as facebook and myspace. It is meant to be exclusively to students of Duke and with the purpose of trying to create an online community that brings everyone in Duke closer together both on and offline. It is also filled with reviews and descriptions of places and things relating to Duke itself and the surrounding area. Surprisingly enough this website is ran solely by volunteers showing the dedication of its members through its polished presentation.

Interview(first person)

-Could you please tell us about your topic for the upcoming paper?
-First person shots in video games, movies and pictures create a feeling that the viewer is part of the scene.
-Is there any specific reason you chose this topic?
-I have always been a fan of movies and different filming techniques. The movie Planet Earth has a seen where the camera goes over the edge of a cliff, which gives the viewer a thrill while in first person; I think that played a big role in me choosing this as my topic.
-For what purpose is first person used usually in video games, movies and pictures?
-First person is almost always used to intensify a persons experience and putting the audience in the scene.
-You mentioned the movie example; do you have any other examples?
-For video games, there are shooter games, in which you feel as if you are part of the action, which is part of why they are so successful, and for pictures I have this picture of a gun being pointed at the viewer which gives the viewer a real shock. I also have another picture of the edge of the Empire State building in which you see straight down.

Brief explanation of how telescopes work:
Telescopes originated when scientists discovered the properties of light to stray from its original path as it passes from one medium to another, also known as refraction. This ability of a lens to redirect light to a desired point is what lies behind the basic telescope invention.
